In an effort to be more positive, we won't complain that we had to give away tickets to tonight's game instead of taking Trent to his first game because of Fox's bonehead decision to move some Saturday games to the night instead of the afternoon.
Nope, we're just going to enjoy the wonderful day we had with our son.
Trent woke up in an exceptional mood that did not diminish all day, even though he took just two 20-minute naps by dinner. We took care of some things for his upcoming first birthday party, went to our local zoo (he was engrossed by a recently shorn alpaca) and then capped it off by taking him out for ice cream (we give him little tastes and he gets cranky when the spoon goes into our mouths instead of his). And, of course, he played as hard as an 11-month-old can.
With the ice cream-fueled sugar kick, he stayed up a little later than normal, so he did get to see a portion of tonight's game.
It was such a great day that we're no longer bitter toward Fox. Although Trent would have been adorable on Phan-o-Vision. (And, he would have gotten to see the Phillies beat the Rangers 2-0.)

Tickets
Our six pack of Phillies tickets arrived last week. It's a good thing we ordered early because the Cliff Lee signing has made hard-to-get tickets even harder to get. I'd like to meet the guy who says, "There's no way I can afford to splurge a couple hundred dollars on a team with three aces, but add a fourth and I'm so there!"
Nonetheless, we're convinced that despite our 80 percent chance of seeing an ace, assuming the hosses stay healthy, on any of the six games we go to, we'll still wind up seeing Joe Blanton more than once.
And, we've already hit a scheduling snafu. We weren't planning on bringing Trent to Citizens Bank Park this year. We were going to have him work his way up through the minors (Camden, Trenton or Lakewood) before going to the majors.
But his grandmom promised her other grandchild a visit on a weekend we picked for a game. So Trent will get his first taste of the Phanatic this spring.
We were planning on him meeting the Phanatic last Saturday at a Phillies store event, but we backed out when we learned the calendar Christine wanted isn't yet available (they needed to replace the month scheduled for Dennys Reyes). We decided that without that reason to go to the park on a cold morning, it probably wasn't worth waiting in line with an infant to see Phanta Claus. Maybe next year.

Phillies don't deserve a raise
The Phillies are raising ticket prices. Just like they did last year. (The "problem solved" link within the post no longer works, but I'm fairly certain it linked to last year's price hike. And, good thing they went with Placido Polanco instead of Chone Figgins, huh?)
But there are many reasons why the Phillies shouldn't raise prices for next season:
1. They had a worse year, which was worse than the year before. They haven't been to the World Series in one whole year, and it's been two whole seasons since they won one.
2. The economy.
3. We have a baby.
4. We have day care bills.
5. We have car payments, through no fault of our own.

The day after
I tried my best to avoid coverage of Roy Halladay's no-hitter, but it was impossible.
It still hurts. I still suck. And the Yankees still suck.
At least Christine has started talking to me. But Trent won't say a word, which is odd because he wouldn't have been going anyway.

Just great
What a day.
We wound up selling our playoff tickets at a whopping $10 profit because I couldn't take a day off on the first week back at work.
Then, I had to unexpectedly work late, forcing me to renege on a dinner promise to Christine, miss watching the game with her and Trent, and totally miss an evening with our son.
And, of course, to make matters worse, as soon as I got into the car I heard the announcers say, "I wonder if Don Larsen is watching this." I knew Roy Halladay would pitch a perfect game.
He didn't. Doc gave up a walk, but finished with the second no-hitter in postseason history in the Phillies 4-0 win over the Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS.
To recap: My family's upset, I'm upset, work's probably upset that I wasn't enthusiastic about staying late, and I cost Christine and myself probably our best shot at ever seeing a no-hitter in person.
What a great night.

Yankees suck
Of course MLB wouldn't schedule the Yankees to play a game that's not in a prime-time slot. That wouldn't be fair to New Yorkers. They should never have to choose between work and watching a playoff game. That would be un-American.
We're not surprised that Phillies fans got the shaft, but we thought baseball would throw us a bone and give us a 6 p.m. start for Wednesday's game, not 5 p.m. We would have missed the beginning, but we still would have made it, unless Roy Halladay decided to set the record for the quickest perfect game ever. Unfortunately, it looks like we won't be attending an NLDS game for the first time since the Phillies four-year playoff run began - unless Trent's super-secret plan to get rich and allow us to retire occurs before Wednesday. He's been working very hard on it.

Game 1 decisions
The media are speculating that Roy Halladay will start Game 1 of the NLDS on Wednesday. They're really going out on a limb with that one - why don't they say that Jon Lester won't start Game 1 of the playoffs?
Anyway, we have more pressing considerations for Game 1. We bought tickets. We don't know what time the game will be played, and I'm not exactly in a position to ask for a day off on the first week back after spending six weeks on leave to run Daddy Daycare.
We'll figure something out ... even if it's how to sell tickets on StubHub.
Today's game: Our teams' regular-season fates are sealed, but Christine is still watching the Phillies spring training lineup take on the Nationals. SoxandPhils scores no longer matter until Wednesday. {Yes, they do matter. The Phillies won 7-1. The Red Sox are losing, again.}

Flashback
This week, we found out the Phillies are doling out the opportunity to purchase playoff tickets. And, they're playing the Brewers.
That combination has given me flashbacks to 2008, when I almost talked Christine into not reserving playoff tickets because I thought it was a waste of $20 when the Phillies were 3.5 games behind the Mets and four games behind the Wild-Card leading Brewers. I didn't think they'd sweep the Brewers and Braves to propel them to their World Series win.
How would my life be different if I convinced Christine not to buy tickets and we sat home instead of being at the park for both halves of Game 5 of the World Series? Would I still have a wife? I posed that question to Christine tonight. I didn't get an answer. I'm glad I don't need to know the answer.
More PhilsandBrews: We loved the shirts worn by the family of Brewers pitcher Zack Braddock, a South Jersey native. They said "Phillies by choice, Brewers by blood." We'll have to remember that if Trent winds up playing for a team other than the Red Sox or Phillies: "SoxandPhils by choice, Trent's team by love."

A little hand for the newest SoxandPhil
A month ago, we wished SoxandPhil Heathcliff Slocumb a happy birthday. Little did we know then that our son was born that day.Trent was born on June 7. He came home today and is already showing signs of being a SoxandPhil.
I read him his first book - a baby Red Sox primer. He knows that the Phanatic is a better mascot than Wally, his favorite lullaby is Take Me Out to the Ballgame and, of course, he knows the Yankees are bad.
We figure he'll be starting for the Red Sox or Phillies in 2033. He has soft hands and is little (so far), so he'll probably be a second baseman. But he won't be pressured.
I know the posts have sucked the past two weeks as we prepared for Trent to enter our family. I don't think raising a newborn will allow us to devote more time to the blog, but we should have some interesting stories to tell.
And, we're already being responsible. We gave away tickets we had for Sunday's Phillies game against the Reds. We're undecided whether Trent will be ready for his first game next month. Probably not.
Today's game: Trent inspired the Phillies to a 4-3 win over the Reds in the 12th on a Brian Schneider home run. The Sox and Phils are undefeated since Trent came home.

Reliving perfection
Because the Red Sox spent their Memorial Day off, watching Casey Kelly pitch for Portland and the second-place Phillies continue to struggle (9-3 loss to the temporarily first-place Braves), all we can do is bask in the glory that is Roy Halladay.
This morning we watched his perfect game. Six whole minutes of it:
Tonight, we may watch the extended version as Comcast SportsNet is replaying the game. Our apologies to the Flyers, playing Game 2 of the finals tonight. It's scoreless in the first period.
We're also considering buying tickets to Roy Halladay's big game. No, we're not. We think this idea - the Marlins are selling unused tickets for Saturday's game at regular price - is stupid. You were either one of the 25,000 who were there, or you weren't. At first I was considering ripping the Marlins over this, but Christine convinced me that they're just taking advantage of people's stupidity. Go capitalism, I guess.

We're going to Baltimore
I know, not really exotic.
Let me explain: We made the choice to include the Phillies home finale instead of a Red Sox game in our six pack of tickets. We later learned we could have bought the six pack with a Red Sox game and then bought the finale separately.
Because we're not going to get to see the Red Sox locally, Christine found out there were still plenty of seats available when they play in Baltimore in May. So we bought tickets, booked a hotel room and we're all set. The tickets arrived in the mail yesterday.
Walking in style: We saw the design for the first-ever T-shirts for our MS walk team, dubbed the Red Sox. We're not ready to unveil the design yet, but it rocks. It's got a baseball feel and reminds me a little of my Ramones shirt. We'll be walking in style next month thanks to Kim and Rishi.
More power from a little guy: A day after I noted Rays manager Joe Maddon had predicted more power from Jacoby Ellsbury, there's speculation that the Phillies diminutive outfielder, Shane Victorino, may hit more homers this year because he'll be hitting lower in the order.
Surprise acquisitions: There were reports this morning that both of our teams would be scrounging to add some more depth as spring training ends. The Red Sox picked up infielder Kevin Frandsen and Jersey-native relief pitcher Scott Schoeneweis. The Phillies are still looking for pitching depth.

We won!
... the right to pay $64 to sit in what will probably be unseasonably cold April weather as the Phillies play a team that lost 103 games last year and probably won't win too many more this year (sorry Joe Wolf's Vertical Jump).
Yup, Christine won the drawing for the opportunity to buy Opening Day tickets, so we'll be playing hooky from work next month to watch the Phillies open up their bid for a third straight National League pennant against their NL East rival Washington Nationals.
Maybe we'll get to see the phenom, Stephen Strasburg. I know, he's ticketed for the minors.

Phillies suck
For once I can use this title without complaint from Christine, although she will point out that it is because the Phillies don't stink that we have a beef with the organization right now.
For more than a decade, way back since we were in college, Christine and I have always seen the Red Sox at least once every year they have had a series scheduled in Philadelphia. Similarly, we've always made it a point to attend Fan Appreciation Day - the last Sunday home game of the year. Christine thinks we may have skipped one in the few years between graduation and marriage, but I'm pretty sure we've had perfect attendance.
But now, the Phillies have pitted two of our family's oldest traditions against each other. Their new rules for six-pack tickets include either a Red Sox game or Fan Appreciation Day, but you can't get a six-pack with both a Red Sox game and Fan Appreciation Day.
What a crock.
Yes, I know that winning sometimes has negative consequences such as price hikes, fewer available seats and even **gasp** a new breed of pink-hat-wearing fans, but this is ridonkulous.
As a consequence, Christine and I are in serious negotiations deciding whether to succumb to the Phillies' marketing trap and just buy the entire Sunday plan like we did in 2008. Hey, maybe doing so will jinx another World Series, and maybe we'll jinx something else even better.
Today: I hung out with my buddy Joe Wolf's Vertical Jump while Christine attended his wife's baby shower. Along with the usual baby gifts, we bought a set of Washington Nationals baby garb for the baby. Poor kid - he's going to inherit my name and possibly his father's love of a hapless team. But at least he'll have a lot more character than a brainless Yankees fan.

Exciting endings
After a complicated night in our real lives and a general blah-ish feeling about our teams, I'm keeping it short tonight.
We woke up and learned that no matter how awful our teams play this week, there will be at least one extra SoxandPhils game this year because the Angels beat the Rangers last night, guaranteeing the Red Sox at least a tie for the Wild Card - and what would be a one-game sudden-death play-in game on Monday, if necessary.
If the Phillies survive this week, we won't be seeing them in the playoffs. We got our notification that we didn't win the lottery for the opportunity to purchase playoff tickets for the NLDS. After years of getting suckered into buying tickets during the near-misses of the early 2000s, we finally got to see playoff baseball in 2007. We saw three games last year - thankfully, Christine didn't listen to me when I said not to buy tickets because the Phillies were four games out in September and looked like they weren't going to make it. We'll be watching from home this year.
Tonight's games: The Phillies woke up and Ryan Madson looked like Brad Lidge ... Brad Lidge circa 2008 but with the ability to go two innings. The Phillies beat the Astros 7-4 and are also assured of at least a tie for a playoff slot because the Marlins just beat the Braves. Magic number, 1. Christine should be less cranky tomorrow.
The Red Sox came close with their own exciting ending, but couldn't close the deal. Clay Buchholz didn't have it tonight, but the Red Sox scored five in the 8th to pull within a run. They had the potential tying run on second base (speedster Jacoby Ellsbury), but Kevin Youkilis struck out looking to end it. Blue Jays 8, Red Sox 7. Maybe the Angels will finish what they started last night and eliminate the Rangers for us (Halos up 1-0 in the 2nd).
Lord knows our teams can't take care of their own business right now.

Opening Night Ticket Purchase Opportunity
That was the subject of an e-mail I received from the Phillies yesterday. Christine got the same message in four different e-mail accounts. We thought it meant we won the opportunity to purchase tickets to opening night.
Apparently not:

Yeah, sitting in the cold park for a random game against the Brewers for $14 is much better than watching the championship banner being raised.

There's no definitive answer to how much our usual $20-$22 tickets will increase. Just the other day when Christine lumped the Red Sox with the Yankees, I teased her back that the Phillies will soon follow. Well, after your team increases ticket prices by a couple dollars, they'll soon be offering a pitcher $150 million on the first day of free agency.
By the way, in CC Sabathia's last three playoff starts - two against the Red Sox in 2007 and one against the Phillies this year - he has a 10.93 ERA in 14 innings. Just sayin'.

Phillies vs. Red Sox
Phillies fans: Show some pride in and respect for your team. No more selling your tickets to Mets fans and Red Sox fans to make a quick buck. If you don't like the Phillies, don't buy the tickets. Leave them for someone who will cheer for the home team. I will blame you if I hear anyone singing "Sweet Caroline" during the 8th inning in June.
